ladies calling card case

A very pretty ladies calling card case made of tortoiseshell veneered over a wooden frame and inlaid with engraved silver. From the late 1700’s through to the early 1900’s men and women carried their calling or visiting cards (today’s equivalent I suppose would be business cards) with them in containers like this one. This one dates from around 1860. Card cases come in a wide range of materials and decoration.
