A and E Keeling hand painted tea bowl and saucer. Item 4274. This hand painted porcelain tea bowl and saucer was made by A & E Keeling of Tunstall in Staffordshire. Formerly known as Factory X, the name of the manufacturer was only discovered in the last 10 or so years. The pottery began in 1784 and lasted until 1809. The bowl and saucer are decorated with a central vase overflowing with flowers with a blue ribbon flowing around its base. The border consists of areas of pink hatching interspersed with roses, all connected by an undulating row of dots. It is unmarked but the pattern corresponds to pattern 144, shown on p 64 of Jean Barratt’s book ” A & E Keeling Formerly Factory X Shapes and patterns on Porcelain”. The previous owner had purchased it from Moorabool Antique Galleries in the late 1990’s. It is in excellent condition, but it does have a 6 mm long firing crack to the inside of the cup’s footrim. C 1790.
