Sea bathing was popular in the late Victorian through to the Edwardian age. With ladies modesty a drawback to enjoying a dip in the ocean, bathing boxes, or bathing machines, became popular. A lady could enter a box on the beach fully clothed and get changed whilst being wheeled out into the sea, where she could enjoy a swim away from prying eyes. When she had finished, the procedure was reversed.
