Description

Australian cedar model ship in cedar and glass case. Item 3425.

This late nineteenth century cedar and glass case contains a fully rigged model ship also constructed in Australian cedar. The ship is named Helen Bell. I have done a little bit of research, but haven’t come up with a real ship of that name, although I did find a Captain William Bell, a master mariner of Toxteth Park, Glebe Sydney, who died in 1880, leaving behind his wife and daughter, both of whom were named Helen. This may be a coincidence. The front and sides of the case have a decorative carved rope surround and contain its original glass. The case stands 430 mm high, is 610 mm wide and 310 mm deep and has retained its original patina. The case and ship are in very good condition. I would be extremely reluctant to post this item, so it will have to be picked up in Geelong, or it could be delivered in southern Victoria.
