Description

Charlotte Rhead Art Deco wall charger Spanish Tree. Item 4461.This large Art Deco wall charger was designed by Charlotte Rhead and is entitled “Spanish Tree”. It was made by the A G Richardson company, known as Crown Ducal. The decoration of this charger has all the elements of the Art Deco period – the tree is done in a spare, angular style and the palette uses orange, brown and cream, all popular colours of the time. The design is laid out using the tube lining technique, and then infilled with colour. On this piece the tube lining was done by Crown Ducal’s senior tube liner, Fanny Morrey, her mark being the letter F below the facsimile Rhead signature. Most facsimile signatures use the initial C for Charlotte, but Fanny Morrey was noted for using the initial L, for Lottie, which was an abbreviation of Charlotte. The diameter is an impressive 450 mm, or 17.75 inches. Its only flaw is that there is a very faint, barely noticeable hairline crack at the rim at about 9 o’clock, if you imagine the charger as a clock. The length of the crack is about 30 mm, or 1.25 inches. It dates from the period 1933-8.
