Description

Copeland & Garrett blue & white warming plate. Item 4402.This Copeland & Garrett blue & white warming plate is decorated with their printed pattern entitled “Floral”. This pattern was first introduced in around 1830, only two or three years before the firm became Copeland and Garrett. The idea of the warming, or hot water plate, is that there is a cavity beneath the surface of the plate into which you pour hot water. The hot water keeps the plate, and any food on it, warm. The diameter of the plate is 252 mm (10 inches) and it stands 48 mm (2 inches) high. There some faint signs of knife marks in the middle of the plate as well as a small area of crazing to the base. There is also a very fine firing crack just under the filling hole and some grit from the kiln-these can be seen in the photos below. This plate dates from the period 1833-40.
