Description

Dudson sprigged jug with rope handle. Item 4394.This Dudson jug with a rope design handle is decorated with white sprigs of wheatsheaves, blackberries and fruiting grape vines.  According to Audrey Dudson in her book “Dudson A Family of Potters since 1800”, the sprigs were probably modelled by James Dudson (1812-1882) as the sprig moulds are signed by him. The sprigs are made when clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. The body of this tankard shaped jug is a solid brown colour. It stands 188 mm (7.5 inches) high, and the diameter at the base is 118 mm (4.75 inches). The base is incised 966 and the number 12 is impressed as well. It is in wonderful condition, and appears to have hardly been used. C1870
