Item 4589.This emery cushion is in the shape of a tomato and is clad in a now faded red velvet, with a green satin ribbon representing leaves and a fabric covered wire as the stalk/handle. In the days before stainless steel, needles and pins were prone to corrosion, so by pushing them into a cushion containing an abrasive emery, the items were cleaned, smoothed and sharpened. This one has a diameter of 33 mm, a height of 30 mm and is in very good condition. It would date from the last half of the nineteenth century.
