Product Description

French jardiniere by Ulysse Besnard of Blois. Item 3635.

This very large bombe shaped two handled faience jardiniere rests on four feet and comes from the factory of Ulysse Besnard of Blois, France. It is hand painted with swirling arabesques and dragons and on each side in a central cartouche is a hand painted fire-breathing salamander entwined around the letter F. This salamander was the emblem of Francois 1 of France (reigned 1515-47) who undertook renovations and extensions to Blois castle. It measures 500mm in length, is 340mm wide and stands 205mm high. Overall it is in good condition, however it does have some shallow cracks to the base, which can be seen in the photo. It is dated 1879.
