Georgian mahogany cradle. Item 4776.This large well made Georgian mahogany cradle has a detachable hood, and has retained a lovely mellow patina. It has been well designed with the lower sloping sides holding the baby snugly, whilst still allowing access for the baby to be picked up. The rocking motion is designed to be implemented by the foot of the nursemaid or governess, leaving their hands free for reading or sewing. The rounded ends of the rockers prevent the cradle rocking too far and tipping over. The length is 952 mm (37.5 inches), the width of the body is 406 mm (16 inches), the overall width is 602 mm (23.5 inches) and it stands 425 mm (16.5 inches) to the top of the hood. It dates from around 1780. Australian design rules prohibit this cradle from being used by a baby.
