Description

Hecworth silver plated salver. Item 3408.This large, good quality silver plated salver (trays have handles, salvers don’t) was made in Melbourne in imitation of Old Sheffield Plate, which was a method of silver coating copper or brass that was superseded by electroplating in the late 1840’s. (For more information on OSP, please see my blog in Posts). The outer rim is decorated with bunches of grapes and leaves and the centre features chased arabesques. Hecworth silver plated items were made by Platers P/L of St Kilda, from around 1942 up until 1949 when they were taken over by G & E Rodd. It measures 416 mm in diameter and weighs a touch over 2 kilograms. It is in very good condition with only one or two tiny spots of silver loss.
