Japanese travelling shrine or zushi. Item 4115.
This Japanese travelling shrine or zushi is presided over by an eight armed goddess seated on a lotus throne and populated with fifteen figures, a horse, a cow and a laden cart and boat. The outside of the lacquered case is decorated with ornate gilt brass, whilst the inside is gilded. The case stands 330 mm (11 inches) high, is 150 mm (6 inches) deep and 212 mm (8.25 inches) wide and is in very good condition. There is some minor damage to the goddess as she has lost an arm. Late 19th century.
