Description

Large Staffordshire two handled loving cup. Item 3869.

This very large Staffordshire two handled loving cup stands 150 mm ( 6 inches) high and measures 162 mm (6.5 inches) in diameter. It is nicely decorated with sprigs of baskets of flowers and Chinese mandarins. The sprigs are made when clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. It is also impressed with the owner’s name “Vernon Noon. Branstone”.  A Vernon Noon of Branstone was listed in the 1834 issue of William White’s “History, Gazetter and Directory of Staffordshire” as a bobbin manufacturer. Now Branston, at the time of the Directory the village name was spelt Branstone. Perhaps the “e” was lost to avoid confusion with Branstone on the Isle of Wight. There is a 20 mm (.75 of an inch) x 12 mm (.5 of an inch) chip to the base, a shallow star crack to the base and two hairline cracks to the body. C1830.
