Maling Chinese Lanterns plate. Item 4367.A very colourful plate from the Maling factory of Newcastle on Tyne. It is decorated with an Oriental pattern known as Chinese Lanterns. The pattern number is 6064, which was first issued in around 1929-30. The method of decoration is known as tube lining, where a thin mixture of clay is piped onto a pattern, in the same way that you would ice a cake. The pattern is then coloured by hand. The diameter of the plate is 285 mm. The condition is very good, but like most pieces of Maling, it does suffer from a bit of crazing. It would date from the mid 1930’s.
