Description

Oak stationery compendium. Item 3660.This oak stationery compendium was made by William Brown & Co of London. Established in 1810, they specialised in stationery and account books for banks, merchants and general companies. This compendium provides eight vertical storage spaces of varying width and depth for stationery, together with a large drawer at the base, more space beneath the tray that holds the perpetual calendar and inside the doors. There are also five small compartments in the calendar tray for items such as nibs, paper clips etc. The perpetual calendar is intact with all dates, days and months present. At the bottom is storage for pens and two ink bottles. Its clever construction ensures that once the doors are locked, access to the calender tray and the bottom drawer is denied. The original lock, however, has long disappeared, and new replacements are not made.  The piece stands 368 mm high, is 410 mm wide (with the doors shut)  and 330 mm deep. It is in good used condition, with a kaleidescope of small ink stains to testify to its useful life. C1880.
