Pressed horn and tortoiseshell snuff box. Item 3829.
This well loved snuff box is made from a pressed horn base and lid with the lid being enhanced with a veneer of tortoiseshell, the veneer having been inlaid with a foliate pattern in silver and brass. How do we know it was well loved? Because where the tortoiseshell has chipped away the edges have been worn smooth with use and the underlying horn has acquired a nice patina. The length is 82 mm (3.25 inches), the width is 47 mm (just under 2 inches) and it stands 24 mm (1 inch) high. Other than the loss of the tortoiseshell it is in very good condition. C1810.
