Description

Reverse painted glass tray. Item 3917.

This large Victorian reverse painted glass tray is decorated with a scene of birds, flowers and a butterfly all above a gilded grid on a black ground. The glass has been etched and engraved on the back, then painted and gilded and mounted in a stained pine frame. This gives you a clean surface and ensures that the decoration cannot be damaged with usage. The brass handles are replacements as the originals had been removed and the tray hung on a wall as a decoration. The initials in the bottom right are DGI. It is 625 mm (24.75 inches) long, including the handles, 460 mm (18.25 inches) wide and stands 32 mm (1.25 inches) to the top of the frame. There are a couple of areas where the black ground has slightly lifted from the back of the glass, but overall, it is in very good condition. It would date from around 1880.
