Description

Richly gilt French porcelain part dinner set. Item 3394

This very good quality French porcelain part dinner set, consisting of 18 plates and 9 bowls, was owned by William Drummond (died 1917), the founder of Drummonds Jewellers of Melbourne, and his monogram features in the centre of each piece. Drummonds Jewellers was founded in 1878 and finally closed their doors in 2002. The maker of the set was G Demartine & Cie of Limoges and it would have been decorated for, or by, G Boutigny & Cie who retailed from the Palais Royal in Paris. The outer rim features a wide band of acid etched gilding showing leaves, branches and fruit with an inner, more delicate band of leaves and grass all on a rich cobalt blue ground. The centre features a gilt monogram highlighted in red. The plates measure 250 mm in diameter and the bowls 245 mm. The set has been used but well looked after-all 9 bowls are in very good condition, the great majority of the plates are in the same condition. Two plates have small chips and there has been some loss of gilding to a small number of plates, mainly to the monogram. The set dates to the period 1891-1900.
