Description

Ridgway hand coloured porcelain teapot and stand. Item 4064.

This finely moulded John and William Ridgway porcelain teapot and stand is decorated with the hand coloured printed pattern 2/818, which features a large urn and scholars rocks amid floral Chinoiserie. It is unmarked, but corresponds to Plate 1798 in Miller and Berthoud’s “An Anthology of British Teapots”. It is also shown in Colour Plate 8 and Plate 96 in Godden’s “Ridgway Porcelains”. The teapot stands 160 mm (6.25 inches) to the top of the butterfly knop and the stand has a diameter of 183 mm (7.25 inches). The colours are still vibrant and it displays well. There is a fine crack in the centre of the stand and some slight wear to the enamel. The only flaws on the teapot are two firing cracks, one about 12 mm (1/2 inch) long under the handle along the mould join, a 5 mm (1/4 inch) long one on the inside, and some cracks to the domed strainer.
