Royal Worcester comport painted by Richard Sebright. Item 4680.This Royal Worcester comport from a dessert service was painted by Richard Sebright (1868-1951) and features a spray of pansies to the top, more flowers to the underside and even more flowers to the four facets of the stem. The top and foot are edged with a green ground and gilding and the top carries a gilded family crest with the motto “Nil Desperandum”. The pattern- W6977- was introduced in 1903, and is described as “Group of flowers, side of centre”. Sebright worked at the Worcester factory for around fifty-six years up until the late 1940’s, and is regarded as one of the finest painters of fruit of any period. He was also an exceptionally fine painter of flowers. In an era when the Worcester painters were paid piecework, Sebright continued to take great pains with his painting, and consequently earned very little. The comport stands 126 mm (5 inches) high and has a diameter of 244 mm (9.5 inches). There are some condition issues. There is a 45 mm (1.75 inches) long hairline crack running from the edge of the central well of the top towards the centre-the crack doesn’t reach the rim. There is also a repaired scratch to the top, appriximately 45 mm (1.75 inches) in length and some repairs where the stem meets the top. The last two are very well done and really only show up under ultraviolet light. The date mark is for 1916.
