Description

Silver and tortoiseshell earspoon, tweezers and toothpick combination. Item 4242.This earspoon, tweezers and toothpick combination is made of silver and tortoiseshell, and would have originally came from a sewing box or compendium. The ear spoon and toothpick pivot out from the end and then fold back into the body like a pocket knife. The tweezers would have been used to pluck cut threads or pins from needlework. The earspoon would have been used to extract wax from the ears, either as general hygiene, or to use the wax to coat thread so that it pulled smoothly through the fabric. This was important if the sewer was working on very fine materials like silk. The length of the piece is 67 mm (2.75 inches) and overall it is in very good condition. There is however, a fine crack in the tortoiseshell on either side of the piece, but nothing has come loose. C1800.
