Sorrento ware souvenir jewellery box with secret drawer. Item 1913.Although made in Sorrento in Italy, this box was sold as a souvenir of Gibraltar. The top is inlaid with marquetry work, as well as hand painted swallows, and the inscription “Gibraltar Souvenir”. This type of work has been made in Sorrento for several hundred years. It is what is known as a puzzle jewellery box and has a secret drawer.
The box has a secret compartment, and a hidden keyhole. The secret compartment is accessed by sliding the spine of the book on the bottom to the left, and then removing the end. To access the hidden keyhole, you slide the base to the rear of the box, and the centre book spine then drops down, revealing the keyhole.
The box measures 250 mm (10 inches) in length, is 180 mm (7 inches) deep and stands 115 mm (4.5 inches) high. It has retained its original key, but there is some very minor damage to the decorative frame work on the lid. It probably dates from the first quarter of the 20th century.
