Sorrento ware souvenir puzzle box. Item 2069.This Sorrento ware souvenir puzzle jewellery box is made of olive wood, and unusually, features a photograph in the lid. The photo is of the MS Milwaukee alongside a passenger terminal in Naples Harbour. Built in 1929 as a passenger ship for the Hamburg-America Line, it was rebuilt for cruising in 1936. Badly damaged by fire in 1946, it was scrapped in 1947. Perhaps this box was a passenger’s souvenir from the Milwaukee.
The box has a secret compartment, and a hidden keyhole. The secret compartment is accessed by sliding the spine of the book on the bottom to the left, and then removing the end. To access the hidden keyhole, you slide the base to the rear of the box, and the centre book spine then drops down, revealing the keyhole.
The box measures 215 mm (8.5 inches) in length, is 130 mm (5 inches) deep and stands 120 mm (4.75 inches) high. There is a small loss of the decorative framework around the photo, and some staining to one of the foldout jewellery compartments. These can be seen in the photos. C 1936.
