Description

Spode jug & basin in the Japanese style. Item 3197.

This Copeland Spode wash jug & basin set is decorated in a pseudo Japanese style made popular after Japan was opened up to the West from the late 1850’s. Japanese art was wildly popular from the 1860’s onwards and its influence was felt for many decades after that, influencing the Aesthetic Movement, amongst others. This set is decorated with a hand coloured and gilded printed design of storks or cranes on the ground, and in the air. The scenes on the jug are sitting below a band of moulded, stylised and gilded chrysanthemums, the national flower of Japan. The jug stands 248 mm (9.5 inches) high and has a diameter of 205 mm (8 inches). The basin stands 135 mm (5.25 inches) high and has a diameter of 355 mm (14 inches). Condition is very good with only a couple of very, very minor chips and some slight loss of the gilding to detract from it. It bears the Copeland Spode impressed date mark for 1879.
