Sterling silver crested meat skewer by Hunt and Roskell London 1853. Item 4173.This high quality sterling silver crested meat skewer was made by the renowned London silversmiths Hunt and Roskell of London, and carries the date mark for 1853. John Samuel Hunt was the nephew of, and successor to, the legendary silversmith Paul Storr. The cast crest features a demi lion, rising out of a baron’s coronet, holding in its paws a cinquefoil, a five petalled flower signifying hope and joy. The crest is for the Hughes family baronetcy of East Bergholt in Suffolk. This baronetcy was created in 1773, and this piece was made in the time of Sir Richard Hughes, the 5th baronet. The length of the skewer is 245mm or 9.75inches and it measures 38mm or 1.5 inches across the crest. The condition is very good, with only a few minor knife marks to the lower end of the skewer.
