Stoneware wall plaque of Ceres or Demeter. Item 4324.This stoneware wall plaque depicts the Roman goddess, Ceres, or her Greek counterpart Demeter. Her plaited hair is tied at the back with a ribbon, whilst stalks of wheat are woven through her hair together with acorns and oak leaves, leaves and berries. The piece is glazed with a white glaze. The back has been scored so that she may be cemented onto a wall, or hung via a hook or nail into the opening. She weighs in at 2.34 kgs and is in good condition. However she has lost what might have been another small spray of wheat from the top of her head-the loss is not noticeable from the front, but can be seen in the photo below. The height is 260 mm, the width 215 mm, and the depth is 65 mm. She is probably French and would date from around 1880.
