Walnut veneered Tunbridge ware writing box

Description

Walnut veneered Tunbridge ware writing box. Item 4715.This writing box or writing slope is veneered with a nicely figured walnut and is enhanced with panels of intricate Tunbridge ware parquetry, particularly those surrounding the mother-of-pearl to the lid and the escutcheon to the front. Internally there are two receptacles for inkwells and storage for pens and nibs. The replacement leather is a soft dark green with gold tooling. The width is 400 mm (15.75 inches), the depth 235 mm (9.25 inches) and it stands 160 mm (6.25 inches) high. It is in very good condition and has retained a lovely patina. It would be a very decorative item on a desk or hall table. It dates from around 1875.
