Waltzing Matilda jug by Diana Pottery. Item 4211.Designed by Tony Vacek, working at the Diana Pottery in Sydney in 1951, the Waltzing Matilda jug carries a Swiss made musical mechanism that plays the tune “Waltzing Matilda” when lifted. With the imported mechanism and the hand colouring, these jugs were expensive to make, and consequently they were only made from around 1951-2. In one of the photos below, can be seen, just below the flock of sheep , “D51”, for Diana 1951. This jug stands 200mm high and has a diameter at the base of 153mm. The music still plays and the body is in very good condition. Many years ago at an antique fair, a lady told me that her mother-in-law was a painter for Diana Pottery, but working from home. On Mondays a van would drop off items, including jugs like this, to be painted and then take away finished articles. I haven’t read any corroboration of this practice, but I have no reason to doubt her either.
