WMF visiting card tray model 190a. Item 3396.
This unmarked octagonal WMF visiting card tray is shown in the WMF English catalogue for 1906 as model 190a. It is shown on page 169 of the reprint issued by the Antique Collectors Club in 2008 and its original price was 10 shillings. Its decorative features are typically Art Nouveau (known as Jugendstil in Germany) with stylised flowers and a young woman with long flowing hair. The tray would have sat on a table in the hallway, near the front door. When visitors called, their visiting (also called calling) cards could be left on the tray, for when the occupants returned, or if they were home, then the tray would be carried to them by a servant. It measures 216mm across and is in very good condition having been recently resilvered. C1906.
