Blue and white willow pattern tureen by Turner. Item 4891.This lidded vegetable tureen by is by Turner & Co of Lane End in Staffordshire, who were in business from around 1762 until 1806. It is decorated with a printed blue and white willow pattern later known as “Turner’s Willow”. Following Turner’s bankruptcy, this pattern was used by Miles and William Mason and later by Charles and George Mason and their successors. It was also used by Hicks and Meigh. The tureen measures 233 mm (9.25 inches) in width, is 210 mm (8.25 inches) in depth and stands 110 mm (4.25 inches) high. It is unmarked, but it is the same as a marked specimen where the base carried the mark “Turner’s Patent”. This patent (No 2367), for a new kind of stoneware, was taken out in January 1800. The finial is also shown in Plate 21b of Bevis Hillier’s “Turners of Lane End”, and Plate 357, page 286 of Godden’s “Guide To Mason’s China and the Ironstone Wares”. It has  some very small chips to the inside of the base and a small chip to the inside of the footrim. It would date from the period 1800-6.
