Description

Celluloid card case with X swivel action. Item 3523.This celluloid card case with X swivel action measures 80 mm (3 1/8th inches) high, 55 mm (2 1/8th inches) wide and 12 mm (.5 of an inch) thick when closed. Celluloid was invented in 1856, and was used to make picture frames, boxes, brush backs etc. and could be coloured to imitate ivory, jet and in this case, tortoiseshell. The main drawback of celluloid was that it was highly inflammable, hence the warning on the base, below “Made in France”, which reads “Inflammable”. This case would date from the early 1920’s and is in good condition.
