Description

Doulton Burslem Spanish Ware painted plate. Item 2344.

This porcelain plate from Doulton Burslem is from Doulton’s “Spanish Ware” range with hand painted chrysanthemums outlined in gold on a graduated fawn ground with an embossed pattern to the rim. This pattern is 1740. This type of ware was developed by John Slater and, although it was considered a new and unusual decoration for the time, it remained popular from the early 1880’s into the early 1900’s. “Spanish Ware” has been described by Desmond Eyles in his book “The Doulton Burslem Wares”as “featuring exceedingly fine raised gold outline traceries of flowers, leaves, arabesques and other motifs, combined with on-glaze enamel painting and raised paste, often on a vellum or ivory ground”. This plate measures 232 mm (9 inches) in diameter and stands 20 mm (.75 of an inch) high. It is in very good condition, with only some very minor rubbing of the gilding to the rim to detract from it. It dates from the period 1884-90.
