Description

Doulton Lambeth stoneware hunting ware lidded pot. Item 4684.This Doulton Lambeth stoneware hunting ware lidded pot features four sprigged motifs of topers (drinkers) around the body, and the lid carries a sprigged garland of flowers. The top of the body and the lid have been dipped in a darker ochre brown glaze. The rim and base of the body are decorated with a very fine chain motif, which is echoed around the rim of the lid. This would have been done with a coggle wheel. The sprigs are made when clay is pressed into a very shallow mould, gently teased out, and then carefully applied by hand to the body of the jug, before the piece is fired and glazed. It stands 137 mm (5.5 inches) high and gas a diameter of 117 mm (just over 4.5 inches). There is a shallow 3 mm long flake taken out of the underside of the lid and two very small areas of damage to the garland on the lid.  The small round sticker on the base with the number 86 is an inventory number, indicating that this piece was once part of a collection. C1880.
