Guy Boyd painted vase. Item 4744.This vase from the Guy Boyd pottery features three seagulls fishing in choppy waters against a blue, cloudy sky. The decoration is a combination of painting and sgraffito. Sgraffito is a tecnique whereby wet paint is scraped away revealing layers underneath. In this case it reveals the white clay, which has been used to provide whiteness to the gulls and the waves. The signature on the base has been done that way too. It stands 210 mm high and has a diameter of 145 mm. It does have some faint crazing, but other than that it is in very good condition. It would date from the late 1950’s.
