Description

Maling Peona plate. Item 4368. A very colourful plate from the Maling factory of Newcastle on Tyne. It is decorated with the Peona pattern, which consists of peonies and butterflies on a dark blue ground. The pattern number is 6504, which was first issued in 1936. The method of decoration is known as tube lining, where a thin mixture of clay is piped onto a pattern, in the same way that you would ice a cake. The pattern is then coloured by hand. The diameter of the plate is 285 mm (11.25 inches). The condition is very good, but like most pieces of Maling, it does suffer from a bit of crazing. It would date from the late 1930’s.
