Maling Peona plate. Item 4368. A very colourful plate from the Maling factory of Newcastle on Tyne. It is decorated with the Peona pattern, which consists of peonies and butterflies on a dark blue ground. The pattern number is 6504, which was first issued in 1936. The method of decoration is known as tube lining, where a thin mixture of clay is piped onto a pattern, in the same way that you would ice a cake. The pattern is then coloured by hand. The diameter of the plate is 285 mm. The condition is very good, but like most pieces of Maling, it does suffer from a bit of crazing. It would date from the late 1930’s.
