Sorrento ware carved and inlaid walnut dish. Item 4548.This very attractive Sorrento ware dish in walnut features a central scene of a small boy seated on some rocks, fishing in the Mediterranean. This marquetry decoration is achieved by inlaying veneers of different coloured and grained timbers, with smaller details highlighted with pen and ink. Surrounding this central scene is a pierced frieze of carved oak leaves and the outer rim is inlaid with a ring of marquetry flowers. Facing the Bay of Naples, Sorrento has been famous for many centuries for this type of woodwork. The dish measures 194 mm (7.75 inches) in length, and is 145 mm (5.75 inches) wide. There is a small amount of damage as can be seen in the photos. C 1900.
