Description

Writing box veneered with rosewood and maple. Item 3664.This very decorative writing box or writing slope, is veneered with rosewood and maple to form a striking stylised foliate pattern to the top and front, with the other three sides veneered in plain rosewood. The pattern is offset with a circle of mother-of-pearl to the centre of the lid and a mother-of-pearl escutcheon to the front. Internally it features room for two inkwells, a lift up lid for the pen storage and a replacement black leather to the slope, which has been embellished with gold tooling. It measures 405 mm (16 inches) in width, 235 mm (9.25 inches) deep and stands 127 mm (5 inches) high. It is in very good condition, has retained a wonderful patina and would make an eye-catching item on a hall table or desk. It would date from around 1855.
