Description
1797 cartwheel penny locket. Item 4514. The cartwheel penny was circulated in 1797 as the first British copper penny. The obverse has a portait of George III and the reverse has a seated statue of Brittania. This fairly worn specimen has been converted into a locket with facility for two photographs inside. It is 40 mm (1.5 inches) in diameter, mounted in white metal, possibly silver but unmarked, and weighs 50 gms, including the chain.
