Description

Doulton Burslem Corolian Ware vase. Item 4624.This gourd shaped vase is from Doulton Burslem’s Corolian Ware line that was made from 1891-1902 and came from the studio of Robert Allen, a very talented designer and painter. The decoration was achieved using the sgraffito method, where the vase was first coated in the rich cobalt blue ground, then the ground was removed with dry brushes exposing the white body to form the flowers. It has been done most delicately and the raised gilt highlights, another Allen speciality, were then added. The pattern number RA 1755, which was first issued in around 1895, shows that it came from Allen’s studio, and the painter’s mark TK may stand for T Kelsall, one of Allen’s pseudonyms. Impressed into the base is the date for May 1898. This vase stands 152 mm (6 inches) high and has a diameter of 155 mm (6 inches). It has lost a lot of the gilding to the rim, and there is a hairline crack to the base.
