Description

Pair of Rubelles Email Ombrant majolica plates. Item 4708.The decoration on this pair of Email Ombrant majolica dessert plates from the Rubelles factory is achieved using graduated intaglio designs that are then flooded with the glaze to give form to the design. In some ways it is similar to the technique to create lithophanes. Around each rim are scenes of riders on horseback and camel trains with delicate backgrounds of castles, a ship at sea and forests. The centre decorations are different scenes of European lakes and lakeside buildings. The patent for this technique was taken out in 1827 by Baron Amable, who later set up a factory in Rubelles with Baron Alexis du Tremblay whose initials appear in the mark on the base. The diameter of these plates is 210 mm (8.25 inches). A new glaze was introduced in 1852 that was later found to be easily scratched and the light scratches on the glaze to the centres indicate that these plates probably date from the period 1852-7. The factory closed in 1857.
