Victorian Torquay ware loving cup. Item 4884.This Victorian loving cup was made around the Torquay area in the of southern part of England. The red clay body has been covered in a aqua coloured slip, with the motto scratched through the slip to reveal the body. This technique is known as sgraffito. There is also a decorative motif to the back, painted in coloured slip. The motto reads “The world has battle room for all. Go fight and conquer if ye can. But if ye rise or if ye fall, Be each, pray God, a gentleman”. It stands 132 mm (5 1/8th inches) and has a diameter of 95 mm (3.75 inches) across the top. It is in very good condition and would date from around 1885.
